A Latter-day Weeping Jeremiah?

Circa 600 BC the weeping prophet Jeremiah* pled with the errant Judaic kingdom to return to the promises and purposes of its founding — weeping because he knew what was coming — knew of unrepented iniquities.

As we witness and ponder the state of our North American governments, society, and captured culture can we also see what must come? How many warning voices are pleading for our return to founding values? Do we have any weeping, suffering Jeremiahs? — weeping, suffering because we, too, have turned from the promises and purposes of our founding? of our individual creations?

Perhaps we do have a latter-day Jeremiah. Consider Jordan Peterson,1 who for the past year has been enduring severe illness,2 and who just recorded a message (for the first time in many months3) calling us to return to abandoned values.

Will we listen? Will we recognize the rising tribalism that helped destroy at least two prior civilizations on the land? Will we take responsibility? Will we individually repent?

“Lord, Is It I?”

20 Now when the even was come, [Jesus] sat down with the twelve.
21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? (New Testament | Matthew 26:20-22)
At some time or other (and probably many times in a lifetime), the answer to that question for every human is “yes.” And if we look beyond self to our divinely-appointed nations, the answer is also “yes.” The scriptures are one long litany of betrayal after betrayal of truth and light till the uncircumcised like Assyria and Babylon were called upon to punish the betrayal.
25 ¶ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;
26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart (Old Testament | Jeremiah 9:25–26).
When we read scripture, especially Isaiah, Jeremiah and the  Book of Mormon, we see how the pattern repeats and repeats. Having all these scriptural witnesses exposing the nature of the natural man, do we think we have escaped the pattern of betrayal? Or is ours more hidden? more layered with pretense? suffocated with denial?

If we consider North American, which we “People of the Books”1 understand to be a divinely-appointed land of Zion, can we finally acknowledge in 2025 that we are in the grip of that pattern of betrayal of the good that was fought for in the 1700 and 1800s on this continent? that the underbelly of our nations has contributed more to the burgeoning beast of Babylon than any other because of prideful preeminence in science, wealth, military power, technology, manifest destiny, etc, etc.? On the surface, we still preach freedom, democracy, ethics, equality, tolerance, fairness, Constitution, justice, judgment, and on and on, yet in secret chambers, our intelligence agencies and our power- and global-elites conspire for greater power, gain, glory, and, above all, domination. The evidence is recorded everywhere — for over a century — but we keep ignoring it (or shelving it under fiction or “conspiracy theory”) and re-electing, re-appointing, elevating many of the same generational power-abusers and ideologues over and over. The Balaam strategy2 of corrupt and conquer is in full swing. Ask: what nation exports the most corrupted "entertainment" and hypocrisy? Do we imagine that the good we do excuses, counterbalances, or outweighs the horrifying evils? Do we really think Babylon is collapsing because of recent events? Read Jeremiah, a prophet unto the nations,3 and substitute North America 2025 for the accusations and ask “Is it WE?”

And if it is, we may already have our "uncircumcised" Nebuchadnezzar at work performing his service for God until he too exceeds his authority and needs his own punishment.4 In the meantime, we may still have time to wake-up and cleanup, both personally and nationally.

Perhaps begin with a chronological reading and reflection of Jeremiah. As some students of scripture have discovered, Jeremiah was not compiled in true chronology,5 so I set out below the footnotes, an ordered chronology with chapter headings to show in summary the dire and deteriorating state of the kingdom of Judah (and all those other nations God names). In my view, until we see history and our own times in light of this repeating cycle of pride and betrayal, we will never understand the necessity of a Nebuchadnezzar nor the "treasonous" words of Jeremiah in chapter 27.

In company with Jeremiah, the extensive exposés ("revelations") of investigative journalists like George Webb,6 journalist / historical analyst Peter Duke,7 and many others8 reveal the depth of criminality, corruption, hypocrisy, and staggering betrayal that have got above us9 here in North America because of secret combinations we have ignored or pretended do not exist despite years of historical, recorded proof and pattern. Are we like the offended Nephites denying our betrayals because they don't fit with our self-image or expectations? And if we think that more aggressive Christian Nationalism10 will save us, how is that not a betrayal of the separation of church and state; a betrayal of the divinely-mandated separation of what is Caesar’s and what is God’s11? History has proven time after time that man cannot be trusted to combine church and state. Agency is betrayed by coercion.
4 We believe that religion is instituted of God; and that men are amenable to him, and to him only, for the exercise of it, unless their religious opinions prompt them to infringe upon the rights and liberties of others; but we do not believe that human law has a right to interfere in prescribing rules of worship to bind the consciences of men, nor dictate forms for public or private devotion; that the civil magistrate should restrain crime, but never control conscience; should punish guilt, but never suppress the freedom of the soul (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 134:4).12

22 And whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nation, behold, they shall be destroyed; for the Lord will not suffer that the blood of his saints, which shall be shed by them, shall always cry unto him from the ground for vengeance upon them and yet he avenge them not.
23 Wherefore, O ye Gentiles, it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you, that thereby ye may repent of your sins, and suffer not that these murderous combinations shall get above you, which are built up to get power and gain—and the work, yea, even the work of destruction come upon you, yea, even the sword of the justice of the Eternal God shall fall upon you, to your overthrow and destruction if ye shall suffer these things to be.
24 Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it, because of the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up.
25 For it cometh to pass that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries; and it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people, for it is built up by the devil, who is the father of all lies; even that same liar who beguiled our first parents, yea, even that same liar who hath caused man to commit murder from the beginning; who hath hardened the hearts of men that they have murdered the prophets, and stoned them, and cast them out from the beginning.

19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

Jeremiah Chronology (per Mark Biltz) with chapter summaries from the KJV of the Bible published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
For 40 plus years (beginning c. 627 BC), the prophet Jeremiah preached of impending destruction of the kingdom of Judah (which also contained remnants of the kingdom of Israel that had been decimated by Assyria about 100 years previous). The three main kings during Jeremiah’s prophetic call were:
     Josiah (641/40 – 609 BC)
     Jehoiakim (609 – 598 BC)
     Zedekiah (597 – 586 BC)
Note: the dating of reigns is mostly taken from Edwin R. Thiele, The Mysterious Numbers of the Hebrew Kings, © 1983 The Zondervan Corporation (New Revised Edition, 1994 by Kregel Publications)

During reign of king Josiah (641/40–609 BC)
CHAPTER 1: Jeremiah foreordained to be a prophet unto the nations—He is called, as a mortal, to declare the word of the Lord. [Circa 627 BC]
CHAPTER 3: Israel and Judah defiled and polluted the land through wickedness—In the last days, the Lord will gather Israel, one of a city and two of a family, and bring them to Zion.
CHAPTER 14: Jeremiah prays because of dearth and famine—The Lord will not hear because of the wickedness of his people.
CHAPTER 17: Captivity of Judah comes because of sin and forsaking the Lord—Hallow the sabbath day: such shall save the people; otherwise they shall be destroyed.
CHAPTER 11: The Jews are cursed for breaking the covenant of obedience—The Lord will not hear their prayers.
CHAPTER 12: Jeremiah complains of the prosperity of the wicked—If other nations learn the ways of Israel, they shall be numbered with them.

CHAPTER 15: The Jews shall suffer death and the sword and famine and captivity—They shall be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth—Jerusalem shall be destroyed.
CHAPTER 16: Utter ruin of the Jews foreseen—Israel rejected and scattered for serving false gods—Fishers and hunters shall gather them again, and they shall serve the Lord—Gospel to be restored for last time.
CHAPTER 7: If Jerusalem repent she shall be preserved—The temple has become a den of robbers—The Lord rejects that generation of Jews for their idolatries—They offer their children in sacrifices.
CHAPTER 18: Israel is as potter's clay in the hands of the Lord—If nations repent, the Lord withholds the evil decreed against them—The Jews shall be scattered.
CHAPTER 19: The Lord will bring evil upon Judah—They sacrificed their children to Baal—In the siege they shall eat the flesh of their sons and daughters.
CHAPTER 2: The Jews forsook the Lord, the fountain of living waters—They changed their gods, worshipped idols, and rejected the prophets.
During reign of king Jehoiakim (c. 609–598 BC — a son of king Josiah)

"Peace and Safety" | "Violence and Spoil"

Frequently the “Powers” (or others seeking power or change) latch onto catch-phrases to maneuver people into compliantly (though sometimes violently) accepting or pursuing Utopian futures — phrases and slogans like this one from late 1700s France: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. Sometimes they work for good and sometimes for evil. In our own time, we have heard:
Build Back Better
Safe and Effective
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI)
Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG)
Make America Great Again (MAGA)
Black Lives Matter
All Lives Matter
(plus many others).
A prophetic phrase that has been cropping up lately is “peace and safety.”1 Where have we heard that before?
1 BUT of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape (New Testament | 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3)
Is this “peace and safety” pursuit just a build up to another 604-586 B.C. type catastrophe where Jeremiah and Ezekiel quoted the Lord’s own observation — that “violence and spoil” was the state of affairs because justice and judgment were not?
6 ¶ For thus hath the LORD of hosts said, Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.
7 As a fountain casteth out her waters, so she casteth out her wickedness: violence and spoil is heard in her; before me continually is grief and wounds (Old Testament | Jeremiah 6:6–7).

9 ¶ Thus saith the Lord GOD; Let it suffice you, O princes of Israel: remove violence and spoil, and execute judgment and justice, take away your exactions from my people, saith the Lord GOD  (Old Testament | Ezekiel 45:9).
For those paying attention to the déjà vus of today’s national and world affairs, this observation of “violence and spoil” seems perfectly apt: war upon war; devastating geo-engineered storm after storm; “wild-fire” arson upon arson; litigation on litigation; misappropriation on misappropriation; scam after scam; scandal after scandal; mockery upon mockery of democratic, Republican, Constitutional principles and ideals.

To some degree we are beginning to see the extent of “violence and spoil” that the USA (and most other “Powers”) have concealed or suppressed from their people's awareness. Yet, even with the recent daily revelations, there are thousands of witnesses and exposés that remain unread, un-watched because we don’t really want to know the full truth — the full depth, the entire long spectrum from Right to Left — of “violence and spoil.” For many a 180° view is more than sufficient because a 360° comes too close to home.

BUT has God, the Supreme Polymath, given us a layered, bifurcated warning of things to come in His laments about JerUSAlem? Might things eventually come in threes: like the  destruction of the first Temple (Av 9, 587/86 B.C.) and the destruction of the second Temple2 (Av 9, 70 A.D.) if we do not execute judgment and justice with integrity? — if we remain a hypocritical nation3 or a covenant people asking “what is our sin?”?4 Do we have an Av 95 in our future? Do we understand how much Isaiah (at the point of 722 B.C.) and Jeremiah (at the points of 604, 597, 587/86 B.C.) were speaking to us in 2025? — that if we don’t begin to execute justice and judgment 360° that history will repeat itself?

To me, God’s word seems but one long, déjà vu lament6 about and warning to His wayward children, interspersed with pleas, redemptive patterns and promises.

Let us look at our own reality 360°. Let us individually and as families reject the lures and acquisitions of “violence and spoil.” Let us petition every day for individual and national repentance, and where it cannot be found, for justice and judgment.

3. Old Testament | Isaiah 10:1-6
   1 WOE unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;
2 To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!
3 And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?
4 Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
5 ¶ O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.
6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
4. Old Testament | Jeremiah 16:10
10 ¶ And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?

Remembering Jeremiah and the Rechabites?

Jeremiah

1 THE word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD ... saying,
2 Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.
3 Then I took ... the whole house of the Rechabites;
4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, ...:
5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.
6 But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever: ...
8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters; ...
12 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, ...
14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father's commandment: ...
16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; ...
18 ¶ And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:
19 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.*

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.**

43 And whosoever among you are sick, and have not faith to be healed, but believe, shall be nourished with all tenderness, with herbs and mild food, and that not by the hand of an enemy.***

40 And there were some who died with fevers, which at some seasons of the year were very frequent in the land—but not so much so with fevers, because of the excellent qualities of the many plants and roots which God had prepared to remove the cause of diseases, to which men were subject by the nature of the climate—****

*Old Testament | Jeremiah 35:1-19 (Bold emphasis added.)
UNABRIDGED
1 THE word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,
2 Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.
3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;
4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door:
5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.
6 But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:
7 Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.
8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;
9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:
10 But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.
11 But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: so we dwell at Jerusalem.
12 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,
13 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? saith the LORD.
14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father's commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me.
15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.
16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:
17 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.
18 ¶ And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:
19 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

Observation from a Prophet - 1843: “The doctors in this region don’t know much… doctors won’t tell you how to go to be well.  They want to kill or cure you to get your money.  Calomel doctors will give you calomel to cure a sliver in the big toe and not stop to know whether the stomach is empty or not.
Calomel on an empty stomach will kill the patient, and lobelia doctors will do the same.
If you feel any inconvenience, take some mild physic two or three times, and then some bitters (herbs.)  If you can’t get anything else, take a little salt and cayenne pepper.  If you can’t get salt, take pecosia, or gnaw down a butternut tree. Get some boreset or horehound…
I will give you advice that will do you good…

If ever there were a prophet who indicted the "children of God," it was old Jeremiah.1 In our day — at least on a political / legal level — we are hearing about thousands of sealed indictments, but in the case of old Jeremiah, the indictments were not sealed; NOR are the ten latter-day indictments of Paul Washer which he profiles in a speech entitled, Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church.2  Paul Washer3 is a controversial, outspoken Baptist minister, so an important question for us is: Are we open to examining the indictments of this Baptist minister? open to asking ourselves how many of these déjà vu charges might also apply to us?

Washer's indictments are:
1.  A Denial of the Sufficiency of Scripture
2.  An Ignorance of God
3.  A Failure to Address Man’s Malady
4.  An Ignorance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ
5.  An Unbiblical Gospel Invitation
6.  An Ignorance Regarding the Nature of the Church
7.  A Lack of Compassionate Church Discipline
8.  A Silence on Separation
9.  A Replacement of the Scriptures Regarding the Family
10. Pastors Malnourished in the Word of God
Do we have the courage to read and ponder his words?

1. Jeremiah ~ LDS Bible Dictionary: "After [King] Josiah’s death [Jeremiah] tried to stem, almost alone, the tide of idolatry and immorality, of self-deception founded on superficial reforms (Jer. 3:4–5; 7:8–10), and of fanatical confidence in the Lord’s protection, in which all classes were carried away. He had to face continuous opposition and insult from the priests (20:2), the mob (26:8–9), his townsmen at Anathoth (11:19), the frivolous and cruel (22:13; 36:23; 26:20), the king (36:19), and the army (38:4)."

3. Who is Paul Washer: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/2010/09/06/who-is-paul-washer-john-frye/ ; http://www.heartcrymissionary.com/paul-washers-bio ; https://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Wolves/paul_washer.htm . Will we allow controversy or criticism of outspoken ministers to keep us from reading their words and making our own discernments? What do we imagine was said about old Jeremiah in his day to discourage people from pondering his words? See also: https://rosemichels.wordpress.com/2014/04/15/rosario-charo-washer-interview/
