V: Why Wait?

Who of us has not brought unnecessary suffering into life because we would not wait for something we desired and felt that we deserved or were promised? When God says in several places:
7 ¶ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
(New Testament | Matthew 7:7 – 11; Luke 11:9+; Book of Mormon | 3 Nephi 14:7+; 27:29; Doctrine and Covenants 4:7; 6:5; 11:5; 12:5; 14:5; 49:26; 66:9; 75:27; 88:63);
what do these promises often cause us to imagine? that God is promising to act like a maître d' for our “desires, plans, and purposes”1? And when nothing happens after years of prayers and pleadings and “good works” is it any wonder why some get upset, discouraged, resentful, and struggle with faith?

But what if our focus is all wrong when we ask, seek, and knock? What if the focus must shift from me to THEE, where we sincerely:
Ask what God wills in the circumstances?
Seek what God desires for the good of all?
Knock with patience, trust, and openness?

Have we pondered what He means by bread? or fish? or good?2

If Jesus’ “desire, plan, and purpose” was to do the will of God His Father and not His own, then what did He surrender3 even in the agony of the Garden?
“Not my will, but thine, be done.”
Isn’t that what the gospel is trying to teach us? to ascertain what God's will is for our life and then to fulfill the measure of our creation? to do as Jesus did, trusting in and surrendering our will and perspective to the will and perspective of the One who is omniscient? Isn't this what we should be asking and seeking: “What is Thy Will in this situation?” “Is it to be now or am I to wait for all things to work together for good?”

Yes, we can present our desires, plans, and purposes because some of those are imparted to us by God, but many desires come from elsewhere because the natural man4 is an enemy to God’s will for our life. We often miss so many of the miraculous weavings of God’s will and purposes in the precise timing of innumerable events. Even just a few episodes of the TV series “It’s a Miracle”5 witnesses to the incredible synchronicities of life.

So what are we to ask and seek for?
“Please, God, if my desire does not align with Thy will and Thy timing, please help me to re-align with Thy plan and purpose for me.”
Which brings us to the weaponization of “Why wait?” Satan’s Babylon with her credit / debit system has brought incredible stress, misery, addiction, abuse, sorrow, and destruction to countless lives. “Why wait?” in our impatient, deal-driven, ad-exaggerated world is a MY-WILL accelerant. What better way to mess up people's lives than to get them out of sync with God’s will and timing. Several posts ago I considered this issue in the life of Jacob, son of Isaac, and considered three possible keys to getting the timing right.6

This week, with perfect timing, this powerful, insightful sermon showed up in my feed.

In the Book of Mormon, we get a clear qualifier for ask, seek, knock:
26 ... as surely as Christ liveth he spake these words unto our fathers, saying: Whatsoever thing ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is good, in faith believing that ye shall receive, behold, it shall be done unto you. (Book of Mormon | Moroni 7:26)
And what is good? Could it be what is good for us and for others involved or impacted from God’s omniscient, omnipotent perspective?

2. Bread & Fish
(New Testament | John 6:33 - 35)
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
(New Testament | John 6:51)
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
(Book of Mormon | Alma 5:34)
      34 Yea, he saith: Come unto me and ye shall partake of the fruit of the tree of life; yea, ye shall eat and drink of the bread and the waters of life freely;
(New Testament | Matthew 15:36 – 38; Mark 8:7+)
36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
(New Testament | Mark 6:41 – 44; Luke 9:13+; John 69+)
41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.
42 And they did all eat, and were filled.
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.
44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.
(New Testament | John 21:12 - 13)
12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

“The Fish Symbol's Spiritual Significance
Originating from the Greek word for fish, Ichthys (ΙΧΘΥΣ) is an acronym that stands for 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.' Early Christians would use the fish symbol to safely identify fellow believers without the risk of exposing their faith. The fish was chosen because of its subtlety and connection to several Biblical stories, including Jesus feeding 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. // Today, the fish symbol is still widely recognized, particularly in Christian communities, where it is often seen on cars, jewelry, and artwork. Wearing a fish pendant can serve as a personal statement of faith, humility, and devotion.”

GOOD:
(Book of Mormon | Moroni 7:19 - 26; bea)
19 Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ.
20 And now, my brethren, how is it possible that ye can lay hold upon every good thing?
21 And now I come to that faith, of which I said I would speak; and I will tell you the way whereby ye may lay hold on every good thing.
22 For behold, God knowing all things, being from everlasting to everlasting, behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing.
23 And God also declared unto prophets, by his own mouth, that Christ should come.
24 And behold, there were divers ways that he did manifest things unto the children of men, which were good; and all things which are good cometh of Christ; otherwise men were fallen, and there could no good thing come unto them.
25 Wherefore, by the ministering of angels, and by every word which proceeded forth out of the mouth of God, men began to exercise faith in Christ; and thus by faith, they did lay hold upon every good thing; and thus it was until the coming of Christ.
26 And after that he came men also were saved by faith in his name; and by faith, they become the sons of God. And as surely as Christ liveth he spake these words unto our fathers, saying: Whatsoever thing ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is good, in faith believing that ye shall receive, behold, it shall be done unto you.

24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
